Park People: Milton Park Security
Published on 19 January 2023
This month, we caught up with Colin Cox and Andrea Smith from Milton Park’s security team – learning more about how their efforts help to keep the Park safe all year round.
Hi Colin and Andrea! Tell us about Risk Management Security in your own words…
Risk Management Security has been operating at Milton Park for 20 years, now with a team of six officers (including the two of us) who monitor the site and ensure the safety of its occupiers at all times.
With Oxfordshire being the company’s largest operating area, Risk Management Security offers an extensive range of services including manned security services, mobile security patrols, electronic security systems, reception services and more.
The company has maintained great, structured growth over the years, gaining a large portfolio of high-profile clients, particularly within the commercial market, and we currently hold the National Security Inspectorate’s (NSI) gold standard for our services.
What do your roles as a security officer and supervisor involve?
At Milton Park, our roles as a security officer (Andrea) and supervisor (Colin) involve a myriad of different tasks. A typical day would consist of the following:
- Carrying out site patrols on foot or in the electric car, checking for any incidents or parking issues
- Responding to any reported incidents such as intruder, fire or panic alarms
- Testing fire, lift and refuge alarms
- Reporting on any health and safety hazards
- Being on hand to answer any queries at the security and information office
- Monitoring CCTV
- Managing any incidents that arise throughout the day.
Additionally, there’s always ad hoc tasks that arise regularly, especially on such an active site like Milton Park. A standout moment for us was when a flock of sheep escaped from a local farm onto the site and we stepped in to herd them back home – definitely the most amusing incident we’ve dealt with so far!
What do you enjoy most about your job and working at Milton Park?
The people we work with both at Milton Park and at Risk Management Security are fantastic and allow us to fully enjoy our roles. Working in security provides a great way to interact with a wide range of people. We love getting to know those who work regularly on the site, as well as talking to visitors every day.
What do you enjoy most about working at Milton Park?
It’s a privilege to work on a site that has such an array of green spaces, particularly during spring and autumn when the Park looks particularly attractive. We enjoy patrolling around the site early in the mornings, admiring the surroundings while the Park is quiet.
How does your life and work connect at Milton Park?
The Milton Feast that’s on every Tuesday and Thursday is a very good lunchtime treat and offers a great range of street food from popular local traders. Additionally, the pharmacy that’s on site is really useful and the regular events that the Park hosts mean there’s always something exciting to attend and look forward to.
