Company Spotlight: Whittard of Chelsea
Published on 29 May 2024
From the moment Walter Whittard opened its doors in 1886, Whittard of Chelsea has been brewing up innovative elixirs including premium tea, coffee and hot chocolate.
Now a global company headquartered at Milton Park, the team caught up with Whittard to find out how it ensures every cup offers a special ‘Whittard moment’.
A rich blend of legacy and excellence
At the age of 17, Walter decided to leave his family’s leather business to take up work with a tea trader in London. By the age of 25, he had opened his own shop on Fleet Street, driven by a simple yet powerful philosophy to “buy the best.”
By the 1890s, Whittard’s reputation for quality was firmly established, with satisfied customers praising the exceptional tea.
Despite the challenges of the Great Depression and the devastation of World War II, the business thrived under the leadership of Walter’s sons. After the Blitz destroyed their warehouse, the brothers relocated to Chelsea, where the brand continued to grow and innovate.
Whittard now sells its products to more than 35 countries across the world and currently has over 40 stores across the UK, including nearby stores at Oxford High Street and Reading’s Oracle Centre.

Infusing ideas at Milton Park

The new spaces encourage staff and visitors to become fully immersed in its product and brand, featuring exciting concepts from their store layouts, including a tasting area where buyers can sample all of the new blends on offer.
As it continues to delight with unique, premium products, the legacy of Walter Whittard’s dedication to quality and innovation, lives on.
Nathan Smith, CEO of Whittard of Chelsea, said: “Whittard is in an exciting period of growth and, to help us realise our brand ambitions, we required a head office that fuels colleague inspiration, innovation, and collaboration.
“We believe that Milton Park offers just that, and we’re delighted to be part of such a great community.
“The park has excellent amenities for our employees to enjoy and the transport links are also first class, especially given its proximity to Didcot train station.”
