Job Description
We’re hiring for a Laboratory Manager to join our small team at Metaltest UK, part of LTi Metaltech Ltd.
The purpose of this role is to manage the services and operations of the laboratory, including maintaining accreditations and regulatory standards, in testing, inspecting, certification and calibration. In addition, the Laboratory Manager is responsible for managing the laboratory as a commercial entity, ensuring that people, processes and projects are all run to the best possible efficiency and costs whilst providing a professional and safe environment, as well as all related administration.
KEY TASKS
– Ensure that laboratory services meet the requirements of the quality management system.
– Perform and support mechanical and metallographic testing in accordance with international standards, and in-house test procedures.
– Produce accurate, repeatable, and reliable testing data for a wide range of tests and customers.
– Ensuring testing needs of the customers are appropriately understood, undertaken and interpreted where necessary. Maintaining customer confidentiality.
– Ensure laboratory staff are appropriately trained for the relevant tasks (i.e. contract review, sample preparation, testing, reporting, machine calibration).
– Review updates to controlling standards, updating internal documentation, and ensuring staff training in-line with changes.
– Specifying, maintaining, operating and organising the calibration of laboratory equipment, and necessary, reviewing external calibration certificates.
– Day-to-day management of laboratory personnel and workload.
– Ensuring the laboratory is sufficiently well-stocked and resourced.
– Promoting the continuous improvement activities of the laboratory.
– Ad hoc duties as required.
The ideal candidate
EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS
– Metallurgy qualification (Chemistry, engineering or materials science also considered).
– Laboratory management experience.
– Experience with metallurgical, mechanical and destructive testing, including failure analysis.
– Interpretation of BS EN ISO and ASTM/ASME standards.
– Computer literate and able to perform mathematical calculations for the preparation of graphs.
– Close attention to detail.
